Prof. Sakunthala is an esteemed academic leader at the University of Peradeniya, currently serving as the Head of the Department of Information Technology, Faculty of Arts since 2022. In addition to this role, she has been the Coordinator of the Master of Education - Postgraduate of Education program since December 2015, where she has significantly contributed to the academic and administrative growth of postgraduate education. Prof. Sakunthala holds a PhD from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom (2011), along with a Postgraduate Diploma in Research Methods from the same institution. Her expertise in education is further reinforced by an M.Sc. in Science Education (2004) and a Postgraduate Diploma in IT Education (2005), both from the University of Peradeniya. She also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (2000) and a B.Sc. in Bio Sciences (1996). With over two decades of experience, she continues to influence the fields of IT and education through her leadership and scholarly contributions at the University of Peradeniya.
Prof. Sakunthala’s academic journey reflects her unwavering commitment to both scientific and educational excellence. She earned a PhD from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, in 2011, a significant milestone that equipped her with advanced research skills and a deep understanding of educational methodologies. Her achievement is further supported by a Postgraduate Diploma in Research Methods from the same institution, which enhanced her research capabilities in both academic and practical settings. Her expertise in education is evident from her M.Sc. in Science Education (2004) and Postgraduate Diploma in IT Education (2005), both from the University of Peradeniya, where she developed a solid foundation in integrating technology and science education. This background has enabled her to make substantial contributions to the field of IT education at the university level. Earlier in her career, she earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (2000) and a B.Sc. in Bio Sciences (1996), laying the groundwork for her focus on interdisciplinary teaching and learning.
